Steve Reich just performed "Drumming" at Cooper Union to help hype his "3 Tales" playing at BAM. Although i've read about his work, I have never heard nor seen it played live. I was taken back by it, and would recommend people to go check it out. Can you say human delays ?
The "human delays" referred to here has to do with the fact that the players have to play patterns that are one or more eigth notes out of phase with everyone else. Furthermore, patterns often START in unison, but then someone has to gradually (30 secs. to a minute) speed up and then lock their pattern back into the stream a partial measure ahead. It goes against pretty much every instinct you have about playing with other musicians, but when you can get it to happen it's really fun and a pretty amazing aural illusion.
