Here's the good news for motorists, including drivers of public utility vehicles. They can now use their vehicles seven days a week during the dry season because the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is set to suspend the enforcement of the unified vehicular volume reduction program, popularly known as color coding, starting next week. The move was proposed by MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando at the regular meeting of the Metro Mayors' Council held Wednesday at the MMDA office in Makati City.Fernando said the proposal to lift the UVVRP this summer was approved in principle by the mayors and the representatives present at the meeting and no objections were made.Under the resolution, the MMDA will temporarily suspend the implementation of color coding from April 3 to June 2.MMDA General Manager Robert Nacianceno explained that the two-month school break could lessen by as much as 20 percent the number of vehicles using major roads in Metro Manila."This could give other vehicle owners a chance to maximize the use of their vehicles during the summer season and we believe that traffic will remain manageable even without the [reduction program]," said Nacianceno in an interview. The vehicle reduction program was introduced in 1996 through MMDA Regulation96-005 in order to have only one law for private and public utility vehicles.Under the program, all motor vehicles including tricycles and motorcycles, both public and private, are prohibited to operate on certain days of the week in all, national, city and municipal roads of Metro Manila, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.The ban will depend on the last digit of the vehicle's plate number: plates ending in 1 and 2 are banned on Mondays; 3-4 on Tuesdays; 5-6 on Wednesdays; 7-8 on Thursdays and 9-0 on Fridays.
