If I had to take a guess, you are using the new network layer (as that is all the 64 Bit Mac knows) There are some differences in client and SQL connections as they connect to different ports. However also keep in mind they are not changing the network protocol but the implementation of the network protocol. Something like an SQL connection shouldn't need to change based on what the server is speaking.
