Ferdinando, If you happen to have some forms open that include subforms and you have the subform open too it can cause the design process to use a lot of CPU cycles which might cause your system overall to behave as you describe. This was especially true if the subforms had listboxes. I haven't noticed this in a long time and this specific issue may have been resolved.
The thing is something is using a lot of processing power in the design process. It's probably doing some sort of dynamic redraw or update.
