Hi,

Recently I bought a 499€ computer in a Aldi supermarket :p 'cos I didn't
think about it, so now I have this:
AMD Phenom X3 8450 triple-core processor,
ATI Radeon HD 3450 graphics card with 256MB, DVI-I, D-Sub VGA and TV-Out,
3072 MB DDR2 SDRAM, 667 MHz, Dual channel memory
640GB SATA 300 Interface, 7200 rpm, 16 MB cache
ATI Hybrid Graphics technology with AMD 780 and ATI Radeon HD 3450
connections: 1xeSATA, 2xFirewire, 6x USB, SPDIF (optical) out, front line
out, rear line out, center/subwoofer line out, surround out, headphones out,
line in, mic in, SATA Docking Port for HDDrive2go disks
A piece of vista software that makes my midisport2x2 pretend to be sick or
even dead.

Installing 64studio on this box worked, but GRUB didn't install fine so it
made the system unusable.
Then I installed UbuntuStudio 8.04 and GRUB now can boot 64studio. But I get
a black screen when I don't press F2 at loading time.
When I do press F2 I get a ramfs terminal after entering the root password
for maintenance. I guess, using this ramfs terminal, I'll have to use nano
to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and enable the backports repositories so I can
"apt-get install flgrx-glx" to get my graphics working, because that's the
driver UbuntuStudio uses. (I have to check this again to see what version
exactly)
Or should I do "apt-get install fglrx-driver" from "stable" ?
Or use the open-source xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd driver? That's from
"lenny" so I'll have to wait until we get 64studio 3.

Also, when 64studio is loading the SATA disks, it takes a lot of time and
fails to read them at 3.0 GBps.
This doesn't happen anymore when I set the BIOS "RAID mode" to IDE.

I'm playing around with UbuntuStudio now, but any tips on how to get
64studio working, or tests I could do, are welcome.
The new pc is now in the studio so if I want to apt-get I'll have to bring
it back here close to the internetconnection.

Cheers!
Peter
