I made a test. I downloaded an .avi and using Kvm I converted it to .mov and .mpg. I was able to play the .mpg by VLC. I made the test with a 64 Studio 2.1 Etch/Lenny mix. The installed version of ffmpeg is 3:20080706-0.2. I don't know from which repository this version is, but one of my repositories is http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ lenny main. Noatun fails to play the .mpg and after this it fails to play the .avi and .mov too, but it was playing them before. VLC only plays the .mpg. I made the test without turning on the amp, so I only checked video. This is my "experimental" 64 Studio install, so there might be something broken, but ffmpeg (I guess Kvm is using it) from some repository is able to convert from .avi to .mpg and VLC is able to play the .mpg video signal (and maybe the sound too).
