It does not work with all .avi files, it depends entirely on the codec
used "inside" the avi file.  The debian ffmpeg does not support certain
patent encumbered codecs.  Fore full support you need to look elsewhere
as Daniel suggested.  By elsewhere I mean you can build your own, add a
3rd party repository that builds support for these codecs, or use a
different package to do your transcoding.
