PS: By the way, the diode is parallel connected, not series-connected 
e.g.

(the 4049 can be any 74 4049 or a 7404 or ...), maybe the voltage loss 
isn't relevant, but for usage with TTLs (or CMOS similar to TTLs) there 
seems to be an advantage by using Shottkey's.
