What video device do you have?  I am guessing that it is Intel based or
you already have a driver installed for ATi/nVidia.

The command line way uses xrandr, a short howto can be found here:

The GUI version should be under System -> Preferences -> Display
There is also a Gnome applet that you can add to the man system bar (via
right click).
