It has been a while since I used ati.  For newer ATI devices with "HD"
in the title or the 38xx and 48xx series there is an open source driver.
 My DAW has an integrated ATI and I use the 2d only "ati" driver.  Works
quite well.  The 3d fglrx regularly causes me issues, like xruns
whenever the screen is significantly repainted.  Personally I would stay
away from the proprietary fglrx driver.

If you feel that you must, it is perhaps a better idea to use the
packaged version.  Search for fglrx in whatever package manager you use.
