This is already more information than he gave.  I have not experienced
this particular issue, nor can I read minds.  Also, if Network manager
is defective, you can still bypass it and connect manually.  The point
is that there is still a lot of info required before we can point him in
the right direction.

Atheros devices are usually labled as athX by default.

What does iwconfig say?  Wireless devices can be labled as ethX and
still work as wireless interfaces.  I have a machine here running karmic
that does exactly that.
