The difference is another step that can go wrong.  I am not saying that
it is not possible, I am not even saying that it is hard.  It is is
simply one more thing to go wrong.  In the past 20 years I have picked
up certain habits that minimize potential problems, regardless of the
platform I am using.  Feel free to disagree or to behave differently, I
am only passing on techniques that have served me well.  In the 90s my
DAW was a Windows box dual booting BSD.  One jumper mistake on a hard
drive and I lost months worth of work.

Real time and virtualization still have a little way to go yet.  On my
laptop I use Ubuntu (technically Ubuntu Studio) and I use VMWare to run
Windows, BSD, voyage, Vyatta etc.  My dedicated DAW has only the
hardware and software that I need.  It is an older AMD 4400+ but is
working great.

The point is that my audio work is done on the primary OS, everything
else is a VM.
