Yes Windows uses its own bootloader, and it does not ask you about it.

OK, right idea, but not quite there.  Did Knoppix automatically mount
your Linux partitions?  If so, use grub-install with the
- --root-directory=DIR option, where DIR is the path to the mounted
partition.

You are not lost.  This is a common problem.  The links to the Ubuntu
forums by guerrier are a good start.

I have very strong, negative feelings towards Apple.  The short short
version is that I trust them the least of all of the vendors.  I would
buy a PC with Windows before buying a Mac.  Having said that I have
friends who use Macs and PCs for media production, so ultimately the
choice should be one that is appropriate for you.  It is nice to have
this choice.

I do hope you stick with Linux as the basis for your DAW.  Best of luck!
