I tried to run Debian before I ran Ubuntu, but the deb packages that I
wanted to use seemed horribly out of date.  For example, I read that the
Samba version they use has all sorts or problems.  What's the point of
apt-get if you have to often manually do most of it?  I supposed I'd just
rather do it all manually at that point in case something breaks and I have
to fix it.

rumors that the Gentoo ebuilds were little time bombs, but Ive never had any
problems with any of them conflicting with other ebuilds.
