I tried to run Debian before I ran Ubuntu, but the deb packages that I wanted to use seemed horribly out of date. For example, I read that the Samba version they use has all sorts or problems. What's the point of apt-get if you have to often manually do most of it? I supposed I'd just rather do it all manually at that point in case something breaks and I have to fix it.

I had heard rumors that the Gentoo ebuilds were little time bombs, but Ive never had any problems with any of them conflicting with other ebuilds.
