I would seriously consider this.  There are enough older Macs out
there where it's worth it for me to buy one just to play with it.

Linux system running and not have to deal with the Mac OS anymore.

That assumes that the Mac OS is a pain.  I actually kind of like it. I
don't completely understand it yet, but I don't have to completely
understand it to be productive.  And (if I believe all the reports)
you can look under the hood and tweak things easier (albeit maybe not
quite as good as other "open" nix distros).
