Alright, attempting a more precise selection of vocabulary here... You are correct in the implication that it is not intuitively obvious how to do it short of searching for tutorial/documentation or asking someone. However, once I learned how to use it, I find that it is easy to type Spanish with latin-1-prefix in emacs, a lot easier than the Alt-nnn I see Spanish-speakers using in MS-Windows, or the Menu-Insert-SpecialCharacter-PiddleAroundCharacterGrid that I see offered in the typical word processor.
