The operating system hides the "folderness" of a package (application)
to discourage casual users from peeking inside and messing things up.
But if you want to see what's there: Ctrl-click (or right click) on
the package (application) icon and click "Show Package Contents."

Most packages do not change anything significantly outside of the
package itself. However some might install a font or something which
would not be deleted if you drag the package to the trash. That is
unless the package contains an uninstall script which is activated
upon dragging the app to the trash.

Anybody have any resources / insight as to what really happens when
you drop application icons into the trash?

I remember a discussion with someone from our group (I think it was
Chris Louden) who was telling me about other things that happen (or
don't happen) behind the scenes when you do that. I remember
thinking, "I should look that up and see for myself."
