like use the diskutils(mac only I think) to find the drive and
dd if=/dev/disk1 of=/Users/drandolph/copy.img bs=1024k

or
dd bs=512 if=/dev/rXX# of=/some_dir/foo.dmg conv=noerror,sync

or pipe gzip in there to speed it up and reduce the size of the img etc.....
dd bs=512 if=/dev/rXX# conv=noerror,sync | gzip -9 > foo.dmg.gz

The bs designates block size, and the if=/dev/rXX# is the UNIX path to the
actual disk device.
noerror -- which just slides over the hard stops,
the mode sync  fills the image with nulls.

some people complain that the sync option creates files that are unreadable,
but I dont know about that.  You can do it without that option if you want.
