For that matter has the individual run diskutils on the drives in question
to see if they are working ok?  Maybe they just need to be repaired.

The bs designates block size, and the if=/dev/rXX# is the UNIX path to the
actual disk device.
noerror -- which just slides over the hard stops,
 the mode sync  fills the image with nulls.

some people complain that the sync option creates files that are
unreadable, but I dont know about that.  You can do it without that option
if you want.
