When you connect to the SSH server, if it is willing to
accept version 1 or 2 it says 1.99 as its version.
If it is only willing to accept version 2, it says 2.

$ dial 'tcp!bitbucket.org!ssh'
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-5

which is not under John's control.
