I've just beens listening to Tanenbaum: a "file server" is anything that takes the server side in a 9p conversation. this could be a dedicated appliance (ken's file server), a device driver (say, #æ, the aoe driver) or a user program. there are no assumptions about how, where or what transport protocol is used. - erik
