Dan, thanks for your thorough description of the nightmare. And yet, and yet ... Sometimes when part of the world evolves in the other direction, it's also a pain. My raspberry pi 5 boards are currently running without cooling fans, and with an inconvenient screen resolution ... because those things used to be taken care of by firmware in the GPU of earlier pi models, but that firmware interface has been removed and now the OS has to do it.
