It could be more difficult to do something mearly for the pure sake of learning. If that is a board that you have use for, then it becomes more worthwhile, plus the benefit of being motivated by personal need. As you may find doing the work more rewarding than usual.
Before jumping in head first, I would try to find some active or recent attempts to see if that kind of work is fun for you.
