Slightly interesting read; watch your sodium intake: http://www.kerneltraffic.org/kernel-traffic/kt20030910_231.html#7 "The guys at Intel were having problems getting a traditional PC style BIOS to run on the first Itaniums, realized they had a opportunity to come up with a cleaner firmware interface and came up with EFI. Open Firmware was considered but dropped because it was not compatible with ACPI, and they did not want to dilute the momentum that had built up for ACPI." ...which seems a shame (and may be apocryphal). I never minded OpenFirmware/OpenBoot, and until the EFI Macs shipped I still had my hopes up. Maybe they couldn't find enough Forth programmers. :) Linus' rant and the unofficial (but informed) Intel response that followed are worth a read. -Jack
