They're very smart people at Intel. They're just not very good OS designers. Few people are -- that's why we're on this list in the first place ...
I've begun to realize in the last 6 years that every BIOS designer wants to be an OS designer. I am working with a system now in which the BIOS is actually a small message-passing kernel -- all running in 16-bit mode in SM Interrupt space. Quite impressive ... and it all is running while your real OS is running!
