As I have said earlier, it has nothing to do with AVG or any other anti virus software. Its not the ability to right click any file. Its the ability to check an incoming e-mail with an attachment. OK, I understand you might trust your Anti Virus, but is it worthy of so doing. I doubt it.
Check out an attachment in an *e-mail* this is my point. Right click and try and scan it. Further why is it recommended that one downloads a patch that Rupert knows all to well about, before making sure that its not laden with virus to bust its seams before installing?
