Hello Janet. You are exactly right and in that same context, I prefer to completely turn system restore off. It's been my experience that, like so much of microsoft's "fail safe's" if you will, they only work some of the time. My solution to this particular issue is to use imaging software. In particular, I use Drive Image, now owned by symantec which acquired it from PowerQuest. I make a backup image of my hard drives on each computer of my network and when something happens..ie...computer crash, data corruption..etc.....I format the problematic drive and restore the image back onto the drive. This not only saves time, but it allows me to get my computers back up and running in less time than an actual install of windows and all applications. If I wish to experiment on a secondary computer, I feel more secure doing so, knowing I have a reliable backup in case something does go wrong.
