Hello Jan Well you have been a busy bee and looks like you have followed all the correct procedures. I wonder if you still see any reference to NIS in your stsrtup list when you run msconfig? Slide the scroll bar to the right and look at the paths of the programs and are any Symantec items ticked to run at startup?
I am still inclined to think NIS2005 might still be lurking around on your system so have a look here and follow the procedure listed: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ni...ar_sch_nam I had NIS2005 installed but it slowed my system to a crawl so uninstalled and reverted to 2003 version. It was not easy to uninstall and I think I had to uninstall the FW first before I could uninstall the AV and even then it just hung, however I left the pc for 10 minutes or so and upon my return it had recommensed uninstalling, which I found very suspicious, almost like a built in time delay. I see Nathan mentions turning off system restore and it immediately makes me wonder if you should have done that before you ran your AV and Anti Spyware programs because the virus/ spyware might be hiding in system restore? Logically, if you are still getting pop-ups the spyware is still on your pc and either hasn't been detected or is returning on reboot. I would definitely try disabling system restore but not sure where it is in ME? I would have thought you might find it somewhere in the Control Panel? Any OS is preferable to ME, certainly W2000 and I have installed XP Home over ME recently without any problems. Good luck Rupert >>>>>>>>>> original message or part thereof <<<<<<<<<< Hi Rupert, Yeah, I already defragged, ran Norton disk doctor, did antivirus, used spyware, have the startup programs down to a minimum, cleaned out temporary files and cookies, etc...... I don't think PC Cillin is making it worse, I think the damage was done with NIS 2005. I was previously using NIS 2002 which worked just fine, but I don't have a disc for NIS 2002 and so I just went and got PC Cillin 2005. However, the computer keeps crashing on me, the internet program (Juno) doesn't work right, and I've been suddenly bombarded with popups and a repetitive dialogue box that wants to know all the time if I want to download some stupid thing I don't need. Basically I have a mess on my hands. All I've heard about windows ME is that it is really crummy, so I'm thinking about Charlie's suggestion of upgrading to 2000. Perhaps I can get a copy on e-bay for a reasonable price? I have a zero budget and can't spend much. I try to get all my software free after rebate (that's how I got both NIS 2005 and PC Cillin). I just checked the MS website and sounds like 2000 will work with my computer. Any further thoughts? Thanks for the support. Thanks, Jan One bear and no virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by Norton Aunty-Virus.
