Hi Ivan
Well you have all the correct spyware/ adware tools there so the clue has to be
in the fact that
they have returned. There may be two reasons for this:
1. Your friend is re-visiting the sites where spyware/ adware is being
installed again, in which
case stay away from these sites, make sure you have activated the "Immunize"
feature of Spybot and
consider d/l & installing Spywareblaster, which is supposed to be a
preventative tool.
2. The spyware/ adware may be removed but a copy is being retained in System
Restore and
reinstalling itself at every re-boot, in which case your friend will have to
temporarily turn off /
disable System Restore and run Spybot and AdAware again after checking for the
latest updates for
each program. I would also suggest running these programs while Windows ME is
in Safe Mode
You could also run msconfig after all this to ensure only the correct
legitimate programs are
running at Startup. As a matter of interest perhaps you could tell us what the
specific spyware/
adware programs are?
You mentioned earlier installing ZA firewall as a second FW and I assume the
present FW is Norton?
As Janet pointed out earlier it is generally not a good idea to have 2 FW's
running because it may
well cause conflicts. If your friend is presently using the Norton FW there is
an option for the FW
to scan all programs on the pc that are web enabled and you can prevent all
these individual
programs from being able to dial out. It is quite surprising just how many
programs are capable of
dialling home.
Good luck
Rupert

OS [WinME]
Protection: Norton [up to date], SpyBot, Adaware, and HijackThis
Spyware has been invading my friends PC [cable] at an alarming rate.
He has all of the protection downloaded. His "IE" has
been "Hijacked," and he has ran and eliminated most of all of
the "Malware, "Spyware," and "Adware." Yet, they have returned!!!
What to do? Need detailed instructions on removal of the pests. He is
now installing "Zonealarm" as a second Firewall. He has Comcast as an
ISP. Has anyone had problems with Comcast and security? Thank you,
Ivan [FmlyRnn]
