Two things that come to my mind could be that it was an old email
address, that had been used at some point in the past by someone who was
getting lots of spam. I have ran into that twice in the past few years.
And the other thing could be a harvesting attack. The way email servers
work they have to (unless changed by the admin) respond as to weather or
not an email address is invalid when asked by another server. This way
they can send hundereds of thousands of email addersses at the mail
server and it will tell them if they are valid addresses, if the address
is valid they will add it to their list and you start getting spam from
whoever they sell that harvested list too.
