I had an email address ([EMAIL PROTECTED] no longer have mediacom so I bet it doesn't matter anymore) and when I checked it nearly a year later..it was full of everything from trojans to sexual content (AVG had a field day cleaning out that inbox)
So yea, if your email address is something common, usually containing your name, it can be an easy target somehow.
