Here's what you need to do:
1. Make sure your data files, if any, are backed up, preferable to removable
media like a burnable CD-Rom.
2. Make sure that you have the install disks for your applications.
3. If you have a set of rescue CD-Roms that came with your computer you can
use that method to bet back your PC. The rescue CD set will put back the
original OS and any applications that came with the PC. If you have this set
of disks you won't need to upgrade to XP unless you want to.

This problem is only slightly more complex than when your car has a flat
tire. You can't drive but the car is not yet ready to sell for junk. :-)

Let me know if you have a set of rescue disks that came with your computer.
How old is the computer, if it's not more than a few years old, the computer
mayve have come with a special partition on the hard drive that is used for
the same kind of rescue.

What you do is put the OS CD in the CD-Rom drive and reboot the machine. You
will be asked if you want to boot from the CD-Rom, if so hit any key. The
machine will boot to the CD. It will then does some stuff, it's finding out
your computers stats and configuration. Eventually you will get a set of
options. The best one would seem to be to format the drive and install the
OS. BUT DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU STILL HAVE UNBACKED UP DATA. Your hard drive
will be wiped clean, at least the C parition will be wiped.
