Compatbility mode, sometimes called "Legacy Mode" is controlled in the BIOS Setup program. This allows the SATA controller to emulate a standard IDE drive. Windows 98 and OSs that do not support the controller can then run on the system normally. Windows XP/2000/NT, Linux and a host of other OSs can utilize controller drivers and use the SATA controller in "Native Mode" or "Compatibility Mode".
Boot Manager - interrupts the regular bootup and then allows a system to boot multiple operating systems by booting a specific partiton.
