If system ram is used for video ram then that would result in the system operating for the time as if it hod less ram. When ram is low virtual ram tries to fill the gap. Virtual ram is also called a swap file, storage on a relatively slow hard drive. Depending on how good the virtual and regular ram managers do their job. When data is being swapped from ram to virtual ram and back, I guess things can get confused. Windows XP is a vast improvement over previous versions, but if the reports of lockups and slowdowns are as numerous as some would believe, then XP may still be flawed to some extent.
