Thank you Emile for replying.
I have indeed tried the options you mentionned.
The "restore" would not restore at any point at all.
The repair re-installing XP from the application CD did not work and nothing 
else either.
A technician I consulted concluded that the failure was due to virus.
I still do not know how to keep the ASR up-to-date.
