Well from the way you describe it, it sounds like your have enough RAM.

This sounds more like a disk access issue...
1) Run a full defragment, make sure your drive is not running low on
space.
2) Check that your antivirus is working properly, or try disabling it.
3) Check that your hard drive is at least 7200 RPM and not 5400 RPM.
(Windows XP performance is greatly degraded by this)
4) Check for spyware running on your system.
