This comment is not to anyone in particular, directed more at the subject of off topic messages than to ANYONES messages. It seems to me that multiple messages about off topic message might cause more consternation for members than off topic messages themselves, they seem a bit like 'much ado about "nothing"'. I admit that I find it annoying that someone writes about things that I have no interest in, but that is my problem rather than theirs. So I just move on to the next message. I have also cut back on responding to messages in most groups becsuse so many seem so bent no saying that my suggestsion is 'all wrong'. If it's wrong, just ignore it, is my view. I always susggest that caviat emptor is the best policy when reading what people say on the internet, 'let the READER beware. Things found on the Internet are not any more 'automatically so' than they are when seen on TV or in the newspapers. This may be the information age but the quantity of information is no guarantor of the quality of that information.
I am not suggesting that lots of people intentionally post misinformation, but some do post as if what they say came from Mt. Olympus. I may not always say so, but I certainly believe, that what I say may be right or it may be incorrect. I to emphasise this when I writge but doing so becomes tedious to me and possible to the reader. As for so called off topic subjects, I think they are better ignored. When they draw flack the comments about their being off topic can become more annoying than the original post(s) [again, opinion mode is on here]. I you disagree with what I have said, of course you can comment to that effect, but tripe is best ignored. If you agree, with anything I have said, it won't feed my ego to be told so, I try to keep my ego independant of what others say, though I am not always successful. Someone commented that a slow computer might be due to over heating, and also that the Maxtor hard drive that was installed was subject to known problems. You will see that my mail is not as badly off topic as those that were addressed to me by Rick and No. 6 since. > > > Quote: > From: "Janet" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: Mon Dec 5, 2005 11:01 am > Subject: Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Re: Slow program start-up janet42uk > > I would only speak from personal experience, because I am no techie. This year I have had two Maxtor hard drives fail and both times, I remembered the PC slowing. I now have two Western Digital and am crossing my fingers. A technician at my preferred supplier suggested that Seagate also had bad press for a while. > After that experience I'm probably listening to my PC too much, but that's the effect it has had on me. > > As an aside to this, I would like to ask a question. > It is, do the plastic protective covers one can buy to protect the tower from dust cause over heating? It's been happening a lot so far as my mails are concerned, where several decide to make off topic comment against my purpose. I dont appreciate it too much when someone complains either and I like people to be happy. > On the subject of identity, I am not Vinny, I have never hidden behind another name in any group I have been subscribed to. Its just their way of creating off topic mails. I even rose to an off topic enquiry generated by Rick a few days ago when he asked where I lived; I don't know why, but I told him. In response I asked him where he lived, but you may have noted he didn't answer. I didn't press him on the point you will notice. If you're going to complain about one person, bear in mind other people's off topic content will you. > > May I also remind you and any other group member here who likes being subscribed that it is very clear that of the 1600+ members the majority of them are in the N. American time zones. There are not many of us in GMT time zones. Consider that a question asked in GMT could generate a continuity of interest for the benefit of the whole group. While computer related topics are being thrown into a mail I don't see a problem. We are all equal members here, but it does seem that there is starting to be a clique forming. > > You might consider checking the Yahoo Guidelines http://groups.yahoo.com/local/guidelines.html and although I appreciate there is a point about staying on topic, you will also note that the first of the guidelines are about harassment. > > > Janet > Who's out of here for the night > > > > > > --- In [email protected], [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:> > > > > HI: > > > > I would be happy if everybody else seemed happier. > > > > I would be happier if people would stick to the topic and not highjack somebody else's thread.
