No, viruses are programs, just like any other application on your PC.
They just happen to do unwanted things or damage the software on the
computer. Viruses do not affect the hardware in the computer.

First, try a full reformat.
NOTE: You do not have to repartition the drive when doing a format
unless you are going between file systems.

Before starting, enter your BIOS setup and make sure ACPI (APIC) mode
is Enabled! You may also want to first run a memory diagnostic.
Download Memtest86, I use the plus version from:
http://www.memtest.org/. Install this to a floppy and boot it up.
The test will not self-terminate, but a 10 to 15 minutes run is
sufficient.

Now, start Windows XP Setup by booting the CD. Press ENTER, F8.
If promtped to upgrade an existing installation, press ESC.
Delete the existing Windows 98 (fat32) partition (D, ENTER, L). Press
enter to create a new NTFS partition. Format, but do not choose the
'quick format' option this time. (if there's a minor sector problem
with the drive, a full format may correct it)

Allow Windows XP to install completely. If you encounter a problem
running setup:
1) Clean the XP setup disc.
2) Disconnect external devices such as printers, scanners, cameras, etc.
3) Check the system for overheating, blocked or failed fans. Check
the power supply fan as well!
4) Run CHKDSK on the hard drive from the recovery console. Boot the
Windows XP setup disc, press R, 1, enter. Run CHKDSK C: /P for a full
scan of the drive. Type EXIT to quit the console, do not hit the
Reset button.
