Rick, > Problem is, technological advancement is not consumer driven, it's the manufacturers that think we need all this state of the art junk!!
But if we didn't, and when we don't... buy it it dies. Or we buy it for awhile, like we did 8 track tapes and then it dies. I can't name the tech that didn't make it, probably because it was gone before I knew about it. > OK. Someone invented the wheel but it will do for a few more years yet It helps to be the latest and the greatest early on. The things that get invented and last a long time are those which we decide are true necessary tech. But keep in mind that the best tech is that which retains it's essential characteristics, like wheels, but are continuously modified. It helps that no one had a patent on the wheel. So people were free to add ball bearings, rubber tires, spokes or solid shapes, hub caps, imitation wheels connected to computer simulators, and on and on. As for non legacy personal computers, we can't blame the manufactures or the customers. It is the nature of computer complexity and that they are too expensive for most people to just toss them out when something better comes along. That something better still needs to run at leat our most recent softwear and hardware. I keep wondering why some research outfit doesn't try to design a non legacy machine, just so we know what it would be like. Maybe it would have to start with emulation software at the start so that we could at least run the programs we are accustomed to. Jim ------------------------ Yahoo!
