That's what we found in this country with Gypsies or Romanos in
the 19th and early 20th century. They had to be closely watched.

Interesting is how the "English" separate themselves from Scots or
Welsh, and how the languages have persisted, even in such close
proximity. From across the pond you seem to be all one people
living on one large island called England.<G>

Perhaps we have that point of view because "Americans" are so
diverse, yet we all call ourselves Americans except for the
few who prefer to be hyphenated Africans.<G> Our common language
is what makes America the melting pot.

I understand this very well myself, because I was reared in a French
speaking enclave in Louisiana and abandoned the French language to
participate in the wider world of the USA. regards, Jack Fuselier

In point of fact, the original Tinkers weren't English, they were Irish or
Scots.
The original old Tinkers were trustworthy, those who called themselves Tinkers
or travellers in the last 40 to 50 years were not so. These folk were as crafty
as a wagon load of monkeys, turn your back on them and they might steal for a
living while you were buying their clothes pegs or lucky heather.
