In Scotland it is known as a Tinker's cuss, which is a swear word or profanity,
which is frowned
upon and considered worthless. We still have Tinkers, as Janet points out they
are all of Irish
origin and these days they make a dubious living from tarring driveways, which
is usually shoddy
work and over priced. They mostly make their camps on the side of roads and
when they leave they
leave an absolutely awful mess of litter behind them.

The Scots do not like being associated with the English because the Scots are a
superior race. The
Scots do have some affinity with the Welsh and Irish because of the Celtic
ancestry.

That's what we found in this country with Gypsies or Romanos in
the 19th and early 20th century. They had to be closely watched.

Interesting is how the "English" separate themselves from Scots or
Welsh, and how the languages have persisted, even in such close
proximity. From across the pond you seem to be all one people
living on one large island called England.<G>

Perhaps we have that point of view because "Americans" are so
diverse, yet we all call ourselves Americans except for the
few who prefer to be hyphenated Africans.<G> Our common language
is what makes America the melting pot.

I understand this very well myself, because I was reared in a French
speaking enclave in Louisiana and abandoned the French language to
participate in the wider world of the USA. regards, Jack Fuselier
