Hi TT It's possible to recover data but there are a lot of variables involved and its far from being a simple process. When a drive is reformatted, the files are not actually erased, only their pointers are removed. The actual data is not deleted until that portion of the drive is overwritten with new data. There are file recovery tools that allow you to read the old data, but its far from being easy. On large hard drives its a very time consuming process . It would require a lot of work and very good equipment that most people wouldn't have. Some data might be easily available if it wasn't copied over. But even that would take some work. Someone would really have to want your data to get it.
I understand most hard drive manufacturers have utilities on their websites that can be used to 'zero write' the entire drive. This overwrites all previous data on the drive with zeroes. I have never tried this but maybe if formatting the drive is not secure enough and RPDDP is too drastic, this may be the best option for Magillakin's friend. Wipe Info erases files or folders from your hard disk so that they cannot be recovered. On Windows 98/Me, Wipe Info also wipes the free space on your hard disk. When you wipe a file, Wipe Info wipes the file and attempts to wipe any free space associated with the file and the file's directory entry. ... snip Avast ye land lubbers!
