Of course you are correct, loading up the startup files with
programs makes them slow in startup, and a giant HD loaded with
many large programs takes longer to operate, as well as the
problem with TSR programs that lock up memory. MS Works for
Windows is such a terrible program. When it is loaded the computer
is as slow as molasses for other programs. I have no idea why it
didn't work the same way in Windows 3.1/dos 6.2, but it didn't.
Bigger and faster is not always better. It isn't always practical
to use an 18 wheeler to go for groceries.
My remark. however, was in the context of a word processing thread,
and the minimum computer needed to achieve satisfactory WP speed.

First off, word processing is no real demonstration of computing speed. It
is because the newer computers do have more power they get installed with
many more applications, not to mention processes running in the background.
Can you live with only a word processor, then do a reformat reinstall of
your OS, then install only the word processor. I doubt that you will
consider your computer slow, especially if you stay disconnected from the
internet.
I like to compare today's computers with the sixties cars with their high
powered engines to which were connected so much 'stuff' that they couldn't
pass up a gas station.
