"In place re-installation" of Windows is the third step of simple
computer repair and goes all the way back to at least Win95.
The first step is "reboot", the second step is "Restore" and the
third step is Re-install.
Doing an "In place Re-installation" is fully described by Microsoft
on their support site, and means to re-install the Operating System
WITHOUT doing a reformat so that all the windows files will be
corrected without changing settings, drivers, or data. There have
been failures apparently but I have never seen or heard of any.
"In place Re-installation" can be Googled for step by step instructions.
It's also been called "In place upgrade installation" or simply a repair
installation. It must be done with the Original version application CD,
and the PC needs to be set to boot from the CD drive.
Because a failure to Boot up looks like a massive failure, too many
people start looking for massive solutions and sometimes end up
with a mess. All that's needed is to run Windows again AVOIDING
re-formatting. Hope this helps
