Yes, but maybe they could if all the 'rubbish' that has been forced to run
on startup were not there. Another issue that trubles me. We now have the
most powerful PCs ever, at least in terms of clock speed yet we still have
slow computers. One thing that this may be proof of is the oft touted issue
that clock speed is not the best indicator of computer power. For me bus
speed is a better indicator, but I also recognize that many 'under the hood'
issues have a bearing on speed. And I keep wondering how much better
computers would be if they were designed as completely legacy free machines.

I'm sure that Linux fans think that the problem would go away if we all used
Linux, maybe likewise Mac users. I doubt it, but I would like to see a grand
experiment that would prove or put to rest such notions. And I'm not talking
about isolated benchmarking, but tests with many users of varying skills
doing every day long term tasks.
