I'm not sure why you would want to transfer old programs
from an old PC to a new one, specially from one that does
not work well. And you should think of the "clutter" that will
come with them.
You cannot just transfer the files for a program from an old
PC to a new one. Most programs make changes to the
registry and make changes to the operating system that will
not be included with the transferred files. Some special
"Transfer Programs" claim to be able to pick up these extras
and include them on the new PC so the programs will work.
However, you should be prepared for considerable stress and
you may not be satisfied with the results. Any programs
transferred this way will most likely transfer your problems as
well. Any data that has been saved within a program such as
picture albums will be very vulnerable. You can do a much
better job reinstalling each program from their application cd
"bug free" to your new computer .
Data files should be copied out of the OS or the programs
that created them into a common folder such as Windows
"Documents", using Window's copy commands and then the
Documents folder can be copied to your new PC "Networked"
by WIFI, or USB, Wired LAN or Bluetooth BEFORE you do
anything. Data does not need a transfer program, Just use
Window's copy commands. Data files copied without the
programs will need to have the programs reinstalled on the new
PC. If you are upgrading to XP some of your old programs
might not work but you should be able to acquire "upgraded
to XP" programs that will read your older files.
You can also eMail all your data files to yourself and receive
them on your new PC so they can be copied anywhere therein..
When transferring applications or installing to a new PC you
should not run anything else, and some recommend shutting
down virus programs.
