I have an old 5150 Compaq Presario. AMD-K6 3D processor with 166 MB
of ram. The harddrive died a violent death and I wanted to help my
grandson install a new one. the old was 40 gigs and the new one only
20 gig.

We woked an entire Saturday and could not get it installed. The
first problem seemed to be finding a way to change the boot up
sequence. It wants to boot to A drive, and the only other drive
listed is an old B drive, even though there is no B drive installed.
We got it to boot from a floppy and actually got it to start loading
windows 98. (it wouldn't even consider XP) When it got to the first
re-boot, it booted to safe mode and that's all we could get it to do
thereafter.

We re-formatted a couple more times and tried again with same
results. The Hard drive was a re-formatted drive and we ran fdisk on
it initially before we re-formatted it. I think if I could change
the boot sequence, I could get XP to install and that might take
care of it.
It has the weirdest BIO's I have ever seen.

Can any one help. This is my first hard drive installation. didn't
think it would be this hard!!!

Denise
