I have already provided the address of the Yahoo Group dedicated to groaning, inter alia, about Epson printers - membership guarantees about 40 Emails a day LOL. There is, I suspect, a Yahoo Group covering all major makes of printers - I presume that they also have a fair share of moaners and groaners - plus some people that suggest practical solutions. Im sure anyone that can use there Browser can find the Group appropriate to their needs.
I only have two little inexpensive printers the Epson C42UX and C44UX. I had never thought too much about the expensiveness of the cartridges and the vast amount of ink that is wasted. Well that is until the older of the two printers lights started flashing and Epson informed me that parts had reached the end of their life and that my poor little printer needed a service. As I said the printers are not expensive, Epson make their real money through selling the cartridges and the ink - which they think you should flush through your printer as though there is no tomorrow. Guess what caused this malfunction? I learnt that this was due to the waste ink pads being full. Guess what ? When I opened the machine I found that the felt pads, although a bit discoloured by ink staining, were to the touch as dry as I imagine a witches breast might be. Its really nice thinking that there must be logic there, encouraging you to flush the machine with lots of profit making ink to hasten its demise. I didnt need to do any research to know that, considering you get a free set of cartridges with each new printer, an Epson service would not be cost effective. However, I hate the idea of disposing of something that has a lot of life left in it merely to underpin the profit motive of big business while contributing to the pollution of the planet etc. But mainly I was really annoyed with Epson for not telling me to expect this event. However, as a result I found a very good website with lots of information on all types of printer, their problems and helpful advice from contributors. Here is the Address :- http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums <http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums> (Please remember this forum covers all makes and model of printers and not just Epson.) However, saving the best to last, my research provided me the means and the know how to rescue my printer from the scrap heap of avarice. I washed dried and replaced the waste ink pads, I was so proud they looked like new, but then I found that I could not reset the waste ink counter. To my rescue came some very clever Russians that produced a great little utility that makes my printer work far better, and more cost effectively, than it ever did before. It supports a lot of models of Epson printers, mainly the older ones. The good news it does include the support of Models C86 and C84 referred to in this thread. Given the lack of transparency on the part of Epson - I now use compatible cartridges - I even refill these. Im well in pocket and Im recycling which is beneficial to most ppl, if not Epson. So if your Epson printer is out of warranty, is troublesome and in danger of being dropped from a great height. Perhaps this will earn it' s reprieve ? http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml <http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml> Main features. SSC Service Utility allow you to do many amazing things with Your Epson printer : 1) Work directly with CSIC in Epson Stylus printers cartridges. 2) Reset or rewrite any chip using special addon device. 3) Freeze internal ink counters. 4) Reset internal ink counters even with empty cartridges. 5) Separate cleaning of color and black heads for all Epson inkjet printers, powerful cleaning mode. 6) Hot swapping of cartridges supported. 7) Resetting of protection counter (even then it is already full). 8) More then 100 different Epson printers supported This allow many people with high printing demands to save some money (program works with both black and color cartridges). I think I have said far too much. Well good luck to all that are having trouble with printers.
