Since it's a new drive there's an even better chance that a firmware
upgrade can possibly correct your problems.
You should try this route first, there is likely an update available
for your drive.
The burning can fail due to slight imperfections and changes in the CD
(even as they are re-burned as with RW).  
Manufacturers write software routines for specific discs and speeds to
correct for the variation of colours and reflectivity between
different makes of disc.  The firmware updates are how you get these
improved routines into your drive and can improve your success rate
when burning.
