Paris:  So far it appears that deselecting "load group start-up 
items" under Selective Startup on the general tab of the system 
configuration utility (msconfig) did the trick.  Again, at least it 
appears that way after one restart.  I'm not sure what "fix" is in 
your suggestion below to "selecting selective startup in fix."
